From Falling Leaves to Falling Snow: Quilts for All Seasons

Hello Quilty Friends!

Happy Thursday to you!

Well, after a warm September and early October, autumn has definitely arrived here in northwestern Pennsylvania! We’ve been enjoying daytime temperatures in the 60s, but nighttime temperatures are now dipping into the low 30s. Brrr! So I finally decided it was time to put a warmer quilt on my bed. There’s nothing quite like snuggling under a cozy quilt on a chilly autumn night, is there? After a week of cold nights, I’m considering putting flannel sheets on the bed.

We’ve even had our first frost this week! There really isn’t anything quite like waking up on a chilly morning and seeing the season’s first frost. The world feels quiet for a moment, like it’s taking a slow deep breath. My next thought, of course, is to hop right back into bed and snuggle under my quilt! LOL!

A cozy porch decorated for fall with pumpkins, colorful leaves, and flowers, set against a backdrop of a misty sunrise over a countryside landscape with rolling hills and a red barn.

I mentioned last week that work had begun on the total gut and remodel of our bathroom. As of this morning, we now have a beautiful walk-in shower with glass sliding doors, pretty soft blue walls, a new toilet, and the flooring is going in as I write. I’ve already managed to sneak in a few showers, and I can honestly say I am in love. Our local construction company, QRS, is doing the work for us, and it’s going to be amazing when it’s finished. Right now, though, everything is still a bit upside down.

I’m also reluctantly getting to see the sunrise every morning because the construction crew can arrive as early as 8:00 a.m. Ugh! There’s a lot to do before they get here. First, of course, I have to convince my eyelids to stay open and make myself leave my warm cozy bed. Then I have to tuck our two cats into a bedroom with everything they need for the day. Little Miss Bailly has been my work buddy down here in Mount Cluttermore (also known as my studio), and she is not entirely pleased with the current arrangement since she can’t be in the middle of all the action. LOL!

Between the chilly nights and these early mornings, I’ve been dreaming about my bed and that warmer quilt for most of the day. I can’t wait to crawl back under it tonight.

As the seasons change, so do the quilts around our homes. Maybe it’s time to put away that bright summer table runner and bring out one in warm autumn colors. Or perhaps you’re already thinking about decorating for Christmas with favorite holiday quilts, wall hangings, and pillows. Before we know it, those rich autumn colors and festive Christmas fabrics will give way to the soft blues, whites, and greys of winter.

And here’s something I really love about quilting: you don’t necessarily need a different pattern for every season! Sometimes all it takes is a change of fabrics to give a favorite design a completely different personality. A simple table runner made in rusty oranges, golds, and browns can be just as beautiful in Christmas reds and greens or frosty winter blues. Same pattern, three entirely different looks!

So today I thought we’d have a little fun exploring how we can take our favorite quilt patterns from falling leaves to falling snow, just by changing fabrics and colors. And maybe I’ll even share a few ideas for getting two seasons out of one quilt!

Let’s take a look at some of our VRD Rose Card patterns and reimagine each quilt in fall colors, Christmas, and winter. Who ever said you couldn’t use the same pattern (you know that pattern you make over and over) for each season or holiday? No one.

For each of the following VRD patterns, I’m going to use 3 seasonal fabrics to show you how the pattern looks mocked up for each season so you can see how a pattern changes depending on the fabrics that you choose.

For today, I am using the following fabric collections:

Fall – Benartex Harvest Friends (available now)

Christmas – Hoffman A Cardinal’s Christmas (coming in 2027)

Winter – Riley Blake A Perfect Winter (available now)

Isn’t it amazing how a simple change of fabrics can give the very same quilt pattern a completely different look? That’s one of my very favorite things about quilting! With so many beautiful fabrics available, the possibilities really are endless.

But what if you could take that idea one step further? What if you could enjoy two completely different looks without making two separate quilts? That’s where double-sided quilts come in!

I mentioned double-sided quilts in last week’s post, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to revisit the idea. Imagine making one side of a quilt in warm autumn colors and the other side in cool winter blues and whites. When the seasons change, simply flip your quilt over and voilà! You’ve got a whole new look without having to find storage space for another quilt. And let’s face it, some of us are running out of places to hide, er, store our quilts! LOL!

Of course, your two sides don’t have to be seasonal. You could choose two completely different color palettes, feature two favorite fabric collections, or even make one side scrappy and the other more coordinated. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination!

So, go ahead and give it a try sometime. You might be surprised how making two sided quilts might simplify your decorating, give you additional storage space, or even give you a little more time for quilting.

Well, that’s it for me today. I hope you enjoyed seeing one quilt three different ways.

Have a great week!

Sew. Laugh. Repeat.

Always,

Tricia @ VRD

Autumn in Color: 4 Palettes for Quilters

Hello Quilty Friends!

Happy Thursday to you!

I was originally planning another fun new autumn quilt tutorial, but sadly I ran out of time. Again. So, instead, I came up with a really cool idea that I hope you will enjoy!

Well, there’s no time to lose – let’s dive right into our topic for today – Autumn Colors!

Autumn in Color: 4 Palettes for Quilters

Close your eyes a minute and imagine the colors of autumn/fall. I bet at least one of the colors is orange, right? But orange isn’t the only color we associate with autumn. Reds, golds, browns, greens, and even purples represent autumn/fall. But guess what?? There are literally tons of colors that can evoke that autumn feeling.

With that in mind, today we are going to explore 4 different color palettes that you can use right now for your next autumn quilt project.

Palette #1

Classic Harvest

These are the colors that we often associate with autumn. Warm, cozy colors that wrap around you like a quilt, a pile of leaves on a warm afternoon right before you jump into them, a hayride with friends, a mug of steaming apple cider at the pumpkin farm. Autumn is more than a season, it’s a feast for your senses – colors to see, scents to smell, textures to touch, yummy things to taste, and sounds galore.

Below is our first palette, Classic Harvest. These colors make me want to wrap up in them, curl up outside on a sunny afternoon, and just watch the leaves drift lazily down from the trees in all their glorious colors.

If you haven’t guessed yet, I LOVE FALL!

Color palette titled 'Classic Harvest' featuring nine colors with corresponding names and hex codes, surrounded by autumn leaves and pumpkins.

PSST! The number/letter combinations under each color name are the hex numbers so you can find these exact colors in your favorite graphics program.

Now we have this gorgeous traditional palette, let’s see what happens when we pair these colors with some great VRD patterns!

WOW! Aren’t these awesome?!? Which one is your favorite? I must admit I’m leaning towards Dulcie as my favorite in this group because it reminds me of stained glass with a Midcentury Modern (MCM) feel.

This is really fun! Let’s check out the next palette.

Palette #2

Woodland Walk

Take a walk in a forest in the autumn. Can you feel the crunching leaves underfoot? Do you see the birds overhead and hear their song? Can you smell that earthy rich smell? Autumn is all around you when you walk in the woods. From little mushrooms poking their heads out of the leaves on the ground to the chattering of squirrels as they hurry to store their nuts for winter.

The colors of our Woodland Walk palette add a slight twist to the traditional autumn palette – they are a a bit earthier and rustic with just a touch of coolness. The dark blue-green really adds a deep richness to Woodland Walk.

Color palette titled 'Woodland Walk' featuring eight earthy tones with corresponding color codes. The colors include Mushroom, Sage, Moss, Fern, Ochre, Copper, Cranberry, Bark, and Forest, surrounded by nature-themed illustrations.

PSST! The number/letter combinations under each color name are the hex numbers so you can find these exact colors in your favorite graphics program.

Palette #3

Autumn Sunset

Have you ever noticed that the sunsets in autumn seem to be deeper, richer, and even bolder than any other season? Maybe it’s partly because the leaves are ablaze with color. Or maybe it’s Mother Nature putting on a show to rival the trees.

I love that I can literally step out into my front yard, turn to the left and I’m facing west. I get a front row seat to the sunset show each and every time. I love taking photos of the beautiful sunsets from my little corner of the world. Here’s to autumn and the amazing show Mother Nature puts on.

Color palette titled 'Autumn Sunset' featuring nine shades labeled with names and hex codes, surrounded by decorative autumn leaves and flowers.

Awesome applesauce! These designs for the Autumn Sunset palette are wonderful and I just love the saturated colors. Which one is your favorite? Mine is Easy Does It…….I adore the little bit of tromp-l’oeil as the vertical strips play with your eyes and the horizontal rows look like different widths! It’s fun and unexpected in such a deceptively-simple quilt design!

Wanna play with one more palette? Me too! This is super fun and I’m getting really inspired. I find exploring these colors in solids instead of prints gives us a chance to really see how the colors interact together.

Okay, here’s our last palette for today.

Palette #4

Vintage Autumn

Warm and cozy but with a little bit of MCM excitement. I must admit that I’ve discovered that my design aesthetic falls within the MCM style when it comes to colors and shapes. Have you ever thought about your own style? Do you gravitate to the same colors, season, holiday? Do your friends tell you they can pick out your quilt at a quilt show or display simply based on the colors you use, the style of fabric, or the patterns you chose? I’ve always said I’m really eclectic in my style, but you know what – eclectic is a style.

The colors in Vintage Autumn are a bit timeworn and faded, yet lovely all the same. I can’t wait to create some quilt designs using this palette!

Color palette titled 'Vintage Autumn' featuring nine shades, including Warm Ivory, Butter Yellow, Avocado, Jade, Dusty Aqua, Burnt Coral, Rust, Cocoa, and Deep Teal. Floral and autumn leaf decorations in the corners.

PSST! The number/letter combinations under each color name are the hex numbers so you can find these exact colors in your favorite graphics program.

Goody goody! Time to explore quilts created with the colors of Vintage Autumn.

Out of all 4 palettes, Vintage Autumn is the best fit for me and my style. My favorite quilt in this group is a toss up between 2M Junior and Escapade, but all the quilts in this group are fabulous for sure. Which one is you favorite?

This was a really fun exploration of color and I hope you enjoyed the Colors of Autumn paired with VRD quilt patterns. Maybe you were totally inspired by one of the palettes….or perhaps all of them! LOL!

If you were inspired, what are you going to make? And which palette(s) inspired you?

Take care and Happy Quilting. See you right here next week!
