The Language of Quilting and a VRD Blog Hop Update

Happy Thursday to you!

Did you know quilting has its very own language? I am going way beyond quarter inch seams here.

Recently, I’ve been gathering up a long list of Quilting Acronyms and thought I’d share them with you. Some of them are so silly, they will make you laugh.

Before we dive into this crazy list, here’s an update on our Blog Hop last week.

First, I want to thank you for hopping along with us. I hope you all had a great time last week for our second Villa Rosa Designs Blog Hop, Fast & More Fun! If you’re new to VRD, I bet you now know why we called the Hop Fast & More Fun.

What was your favorite part of the Hop? Mine was seeing all of the quilts. I couldn’t wait to see each day’s blogs and the quilts — oh my goodness! — the quilts were simply out of this world!

I am sending a great big quilty hug to each of our 28 amazing bloggers —

I hope you hoppers met some new quilty friends and found some new-to-you quilt blogs filled with inspiration. I know I did. Now how will I have time to write this blog when I’m sew busy reading all the others??? LOL!

I am sew in love with all of the quilts featured on the blogs for the Hop — it amazes me how quilters can take the same Villa Rosa Designs Rose Card pattern, add their own spin, and create a OOAK (wanna know what OOK means, keep reading!) really awesome quilt. Cheree at The Morning Latte comes to mind with her delightful scrappy pieced border on her version of the Gypsy pattern. I could literally go on and on about what I learned and saw on the Hop, but instead, let me ask you what you took away from the Hop?

Right now I am working my way through each blog’s winners — please be patient — that’s a lot of folks to contact and get shipping info from.

Let’s do the math (you might remember that I like math — check out my Quilting and Math post from a while back HERE):

28 blogs x 3 sponsor prizes each + 6 VRD quilts = 90 Individual prizes

30 blog posts x 1 set of patterns each = 30 Pattern Set prizes

30 blog posts x 3 Grand Prize entrants each = 90 Grand Prize entrants

So, 120 prizes are being given out and there are 90 entrants into 3 Grand Prize drawings.

Holy Cow! Go big or go home — that’s my motto!

Speaking of prizes, this blog hop would never have happened without the generosity of our lovely sponsors —

And don’t forget, you can order the Blog Hop Rose Card pattern set HERE if you haven’t gotten your own set yet. Of course, I am still working in notifying winners so maybe you’ll win a set.

While you are all waiting breathlessly to see if you are a Blog Hop winner — let’s dive right into a world of its own — Quilting Lingo!

Below you’ll find a long list of Quilting Acronyms. How many do you know already?

Who knew there was literally a dictionary of Quilting Acronyms? I guess it makes sense, though, because of text messaging abbreviations and acronyms like LOL, TTYL, and others. So why not Quilting acronyms too?

Well, that’s it for me, I need to get back to organizing and contacting all the Blog Hop winners so we can get all these quilty goodies sent out to their forever homes. Maybe even yours……

While we are still Hopping, let me show you one of my next blog tutorial projects. I am planning to make 31 with this brand new collection by Satin Moon Designs for Blank Quilting. 2024 VRd Blog Hop · Rose Cards · villa rosa designs

It’s Finally Here — Kickoff Day for the 2024 Villa Rosa Designs Fast & More Fun Blog Hop!!!

Happy Thursday to you!

Let me rephrase that — Happy Blog Hop Kickoff Day to you!

Hi there! I’m Tricia, your Villa Rosa host for the Blog Hop. All of us at Villa Rosa Designs are tickled pink (and all the colors of the rainbow) that you are here to come along on a fun quilting adventure — our second Blog Hop here at Villa Rosa Designs. We’re calling it the Fast & MORE Fun Blog Hop.

You all know the saying — “Go big or go home?” We’re going B – I – G this year just for you! More Bloggers! More Fun! More Quilts! More Inspiration! More Prizes!

We have a super talented group of bloggers ready to share some awesome quilts made with Villa Rosa Designs (VRD) Rose Card patterns.

In fact, we’ve put together a special collection of 5 patterns just for this Blog Hop!

Here are the 5 patterns in the 2024 Fast & Fun Blog Hop Collection:

Lucky you! You can purchase a set of these 5 patterns HERE. Or visit our website HERE for even more great Rose Card patterns (over 600 of them).

Or you might just win a set. READ ON to find out how!

Let me tell you a little bit about Villa Rosa Designs in case this is the first time you’re visiting our blog home, Villa Rosa Quilts.

Villa Rosa Designs is the brainchild of owner and Rose Queen, Pat Fryer. Pat wanted to create Fast & Fun, affordable, and high quality patterns for quilters featuring precuts like 1/2 yards, fat quarters, 10″ squares, 5″ squares, 2 1/2″ strips, fat eighths, and fat sixths as well as other fabrics like panels and novelties.

Since its launch in 2010, VRD has become much more than a handful of easy-to-make quilt patterns. Rose Cards, Villa Rosa’s signature postcard-sized patterns, combine great design with simple packaging and an attractive price, making Rose Cards one of the best selling pattern brands on the market today! And since 2010, Villa Rosa Designs has grown to include a collection of very talented designers, each with their own unique style.

Now that you know a little bit about Villa Rosa Designs, let me tell you about the VRD Fast & More Fun Blog Hop!

Good question and an easy one to explain. Most of you probably already know what a shop hop is (and may have participated in one before), where you travel to each shop participating in the event. There’s usually giveaways and a special pattern to collect at each shop.

A blog hop is very similar to a shop hop — instead of going from shop to shop, though, you go from blog to blog. You will usually find some kind of theme to a blog hop with opportunities to win prizes. And you can even hop from blog to blog in your jammies from the comfort of your own home. Yippee! Count me in!

We’ve teamed up with the most awesome group of bloggers! They have accepted the Blog Hop challenge to create at least 1 of the 5 Blog Hop Rose Card patterns above. To see which blogger has created which pattern, you’ll have to visit EACH blogger during the hop which runs from today, March 14th through next Thursday, March 21st.

Aren’t they amazing??? I am so itching to make the Eclipses quilt by Creative Sewlutions before we have the Eclipse in April because I live in one of the viewing areas to see the total eclipse. Our local hotels are already booked up for the event.

Oh my gosh! I haven’t ordered my special viewing glasses yet. I’d better get on that, huh?

But wait — there’s more! Of course there is, right?

This month we have a cute new runner designed for your special fabrics you do not want to cut up.

Get your Perfect Trio runner pattern HERE.

We also have a snack mat this month perfect for those mugs of celebratory drink and green snacks on St. Patrick’s Day. Remember when I mentioned last year that in 2024, we’d be adding some new Accessory patterns? Well, here’s the first one. It’s super cute and quick to make up and you can use some of that St. Patrick’s Day fabric you’ve been hoarding.

Can’t wait to see your Shamrock Snack Mats on our Facebook group, so get ’em made and post those pics!

Get your Shamrock Snack Mat HERE.

So…….which pattern are you going to make first? Me, definitely Eclipses. I know — let’s do that one as a tutorial after we wrap up the Blog Hop!

Now, let’s talk about the Blog Hop. You know, March 14th is next Thursday. Gulp! I just hope I’m ready. Are you ready? It’s going to be super amazing.

VRD Pacific Grove Quilt Tutorial and Getting Ready for Our Villa Rosa Blog Hop

Happy Thursday to you!

Mother Nature sure has been trying hard to confuse us up here in NW Pennsylvania! We’ve had temps in the 60’s! Can you believe it? I wouldn’t, except I’ve been reading the temp on the thermometer. Yesterday, I even had peepers (tree frogs) on my basement window in the rain. This is WAY too early for the little dears to be awake! I’m wondering what Mother Nature has in store for us in March and April. Who knows? Maybe we’ll have snow in June?!?

I’ve been on a quilting roll since my curated list of Spring VRD Rose Card patterns a couple weeks ago (you can find the post HERE if you missed it). So I wanted to do another tutorial this week. I reached into my magic project crate and pulled out Pacific Grove.

But first, let’s chat about the upcoming Blog Hop!

Well, it’s now officially 2 weeks until our VRD Fast & More Fun Blog Hop, which kicks off right here on March 14th. I hope you’re getting excited about it.

Prizes keep coming in — it’s like Christmas around here! Except it’s not for me at all, instead — it’s ALL FOR YOU.

So far we have 2 AWESOME Grand Prizes lined up. Nope, I’m not going to show them to you yet. You’ll have to wait until March 14th for our Blog Hop kickoff post. Everything will be explained at that time, I promise.

We now have 26 bloggers participating in the Hop. And who knows? Maybe more if anyone comes late to the party.

We’ve also got the most fantastic and generous Sponsors for the event — Hoffman, Moda, Jaftex, Timeless Treasures, Electric Quilt, Banyan Batiks, C&T Publishing, Hancock’s of Paducah, and Fox Chapel/Landauer.

So, are you excited yet???

Remember, the fun begins March 14th right here on the Villa Rosa blog. So make sure you stop by and hop along with us for the week.

Okay, now let’s get to the quilt tutorial!

I’ve been wanting a reason to make Pacific Grove for a while now. I’ve always thought the quilt on the cover of the pattern looked like a work of art. What do you think? Wouldn’t it look amazing framed and hung on a wall? On my wall???

Finally, today is the day to finally make my very own Pacific Grove work of art.

Get your own Pacific Grove physical pattern HERE or a digital pattern HERE.

I’m using some gorgeous fabrics from the Wildflowers Spectrum Digital Print collection by Hoffman. Did you know Hoffman did digital prints in addition to their amazing batiks?

Special thanks to Hoffman for providing the fabrics for this tutorial.

Before we get started, I do want to say that digital prints can be a little finicky so it’s important to start with a new sharp needle in your machine. If you use pins when you sew, make sure they’re sharp. Why? Because you don’t want to break any threads. Take a look at this photo. Do you see area inside the red circle? See the 2 broken threads? You don’t want this to happen to your quilt because it will probably be visible on the front, not just on the back. Lucky for me, this was in the seam allowance. Whew!

So, let’s get start by cutting the main print and the background fabric. I kind of don’t want to cut this lovely fabric up, but I know it will look fabulous in the Pacific Grove pattern.

Now that the pieces are cut and ready to sew, it’s time to assemble 2 side units. Easy piezy!

Next up is putting together the center of the quilt. I really like how this quilt is coming together into vertical rows. That makes it really simple to put together. And I’m not having to match up a bunch of seams. Yay!

Now that the sides and the center are made, I’m going to work on the purple background strips. Here you can see in the first photo how I creased the center of the side strip and the center of the sashing strip. Then I matched those creased centers and put a pin right there. After I found the centers, I went to the outside edges and lined them up. You’ll see in the second photo that not only do I place a vertical pin, I also place an horizontal pin . That horizontal pin helps to keep my strips straight instead of bowing as I sew (I learned this little trick a long time ago from a quilter friend when I was a new quilter). After the center and the outsides are pinned, I always add a few more pins in between to keep everything from shifting when I sew.

Yay! Here you can see the design taking shape now that I’ve sewed the purple strips to the sides of the quilt center.

Next I’m gong to sew the side units to the center. Again, I will crease and match my centers. I think it’s looking really lovely with these digital prints.

Time to add purple background strips to the sides. It has a bit of an Art Deco feel to it, doesn’t it? Or maybe a stained glass window?

Time to sew background strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Isn’t it looking amazing???

The borders are next up. What’s cool about this pattern is that you add the top and bottom borders on first before the side borders. When I did the purple strips, I added the sides first. But it does make sense to do it this way because it uses the fabric more efficiently — you don’t have to piece the top and bottom borders if you add them first. Ingenious!

Here is the finished quilt top. It looks like an Art Deco stained glass window garden to me!

With so much open space, I’m just itching to starting machine quilting it, but that will have to wait for a while, I’m afraid.

Last week I was debating whether to add a border or not to my Duet quilt top. Then I took a deep breath and just added that outer border. I chose a light batik because Duet felt a bit dark to me. The binding will frame it all nicely — it’s dark blue.

TWO WEEKS TO GO AND COUNTING DOWN……..until the Blog Hop. Get ready.

Take care and Happy Quilting.

Until next week —

Always,

Tricia @ VRD

Behind the Scenes of the Villa Rosa Designs Blog Hop

Hello Quilty Friends!

Happy Thursday to you!

I hope you all had a special Valentine’s Day this week. Flowers……candy…..dinner out……chocolate…….and maybe fabric………you deserve the best!

When I was thinking about some possible blog topics the other day, the idea popped into my head that you might be interested in reading about how I organized the Blog Hop. Maybe you’re a blogger and you’re thinking about setting up a Hop or maybe you’re just curious. So I thought, why not tell you how the Blog Hop developed.

I also wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that prizes are being shipped out as I write this, so if you were a Hop winner, you should be receiving your prize soon. I thank you for your patience, the logistics of shipping out so many prizes has been kind of overwhelming. The biggest issue, has been figuring out how to do the shipping as I am located in Pennsylvania (I have the Sponsor Prizes) and Villa Rosa Designs is located in California (they have the quilts and the Rose Card Sets). I just wanted to point out that depending on which prize you won, the return address on your package may not be from Villa Rosa Designs in California. Crazy, crazy, crazy…….

Grand Prize Winners

I know you’ve all been waiting for the Grand Prize Winners but only 1 winner has responded to the email I sent, so sadly we will have to wait until next week to announce the 2 Grand Prize winners.

Getting Started

I got the idea to have a VRD Blog Hop last year when I was brainstorming new ideas for Villa Rosa. I talked to Pat, our Rose Queen, and she thought the idea sounded interesting and gave me the green light to go ahead with the project.

The first thing I did was look at the calendar. I chose 2 possible weeks — one in November 2022 and the other in January 2023. I really considered the November dates, but was afraid there wouldn’t be enough time to get everything done so I finally decided to go with the January dates as it gave me more time to put things together and it would be something quilters could look forward too as January can be a month when we’re stuck inside with the winter blahs.

Before I’d totally decided on January 2023 for the Blog Hop, I started contacting some bloggers who had participated in a Blog Hop I did on my personal blog, Quilt With A View, when my I Love Precut Quilts book launched in 2016.

I knew I also wanted to invite some quilting companies to join our Hop because we ( VRD) partner with a lot of different companies, but I was disappointed that there weren’t as many companies out there with active blogs as I had thought would be. But, that was okay, I did reach out to some of my contacts and found some willing companies to join the Hop.

At Quilt Market in October 2022, we took a little time to select 5 Rose Card patterns to feature for the Hop. There were 3 of us and it really didn’t take too long. I had already decided I wanted to use patterns that used different precuts and were of different sizes, too, because it was my intention that the participating bloggers would select one of the 5 patterns, make at least the quilt top, and share it on their post for the Hop.

So, we selected a table runner which used 2 1/2″ strips, a small quilt using 5″ Charm squares, a throw quilt that used 10″ squares, a fat quarter quilt, and a panel quilt. I also wanted to make sure that at least one of the projects would be big enough to meet the minimum size requirements for a Quilts of Valor Quilt. QOV quilts can be a minimum of 55″ x 65″ up to a maximum of 72″ x 90″ with an average size of 60″ x 80″. (For more information about the Quilts of Valor Foundation, go HERE.) You might wonder why this was so important to me — I had a couple of reasons, actually:

  1. The Quilts of Valor Foundation was participating in the Blog Hop
  2. QOV is an organization that is close to my heart.

Here are the patterns we chose for the Blog Hop Collection, you can go HERE if you haven’t ordered your set yet.

Meanwhile, Bernie of Needle and Foot, who was one of my original bloggers from my 2016 Book Launch Hop, helped me connect to more blogger friends of hers. So did my friend, Joy of Am I Shouting Yet?. And as more bloggers jumped into the Hop, they in turn suggested even more bloggers who might be interested in joining in the fun. Yay!

I had decided already that I wanted the Blog Hop to last for 7 days, so I knew I was going to need a lot of bloggers to participate. I planned that the VRD blog, Villa Rosa Quilts, would start the Hop on a Thursday and would close the Hop a week later on a Thursday. So that really only gave me 5 days to fill, but I wasn’t sure if anyone would want to blog on a Sunday…….

After years of inactivity, I decided last year to get my person blog, Quilt With a View, up and running again because I really wanted to participate as an individual blogger in the Hop, too. So I decided that I would post on Sunday. I asked the bloggers if anyone wanted a specific day of the week, and I worked hard to create a Blog Hop schedule to accommodate my participating bloggers. Bloggers who didn’t have any preference were placed around those who wanted specific days.

Somehow, it all seemed to come together and suddenly I had a tentative Blog Hop schedule. By this time, I had chosen January19-26 for the Hop because this gave the bloggers enough time to make their projects.

Sponsors

Now that the Hop was shaping up, it was time for me to reach deep into my pocket and pull out my quilt industry contacts so that I could ask for sponsors and prizes. I even talked to some folks at Quilt Market and later reconnected with them about the Hop.

At first, asking for Sponsors and prizes was difficult for me because it didn’t come naturally, but I think it got a little easier by the end. Some of the companies I contacted never even responded to my request That was okay, really, because the awesome companies who did respond made our Blog Hop something amazing!

I know all of you really enjoyed the amount of prizes for the Blog Hop and I was really excited that I was able to gather them all up from our generous sponsors for you! But I think I overdid it a little bit. My studio has been overflowing with piles of prizes for weeks now, although the piles are finally dwindling as I am getting the shipping figured out and packages in the mail. As I mentioned above, there have been some logistical issues for shipping that I hadn’t counted on and we’ve had to get a little creative in our shipping solutions.

Going forward, if we do another Blog Hop, I would like to connect with some International quilting company sponsors who might be willing to ship those prizes internationally. This was suggested by one of our Blog Hop participants and after I thought about it, I can see how this would make the Blog Hop even more fun for everyone.

My Takeaway on the Blog Hop

I personally learned A LOT during this Blog Hop. And I’m not just talking about figuring out shipping and such.

I learned a lot about the kindness and generosity of the international quilting community. And yes, it is a community. The comments were kind. The stories made me smile and even laugh. Folks weren’t just trying to win prizes — they genuinely took the time to read the blog posts and to interact not just with the bloggers but with each other.

Quilters really are the most amazing people!

It is my opinion that if the world was run by quilters, the world would be a happier and more colorful place!

Thank you for being part of our very first Villa Rosa Designs Fast & Fun Blog Hop.

Will we do it again?

Probably, but you’ll have to stay tuned down the road to find out when.

Right now, I just need to reclaim my favorite comfy chair in my studio which is still stacked with packages waiting to be shipped.

Well, that’s it for me for this week.

Take care and I’ll see you all next Thursday!

Until then —

Sew. Laugh. Make the World a Better Place. Repeat.

Always,

Tricia @ VRD

Villa Rosa Designs Fast & Fun Blog Hop Winners AND New VRD Rose Card Patterns for February 2023

Hello Quilty Friends!

Happy Thursday to you!

YIPPEE!

It’s my favorite Thursday — the Thursday after the first Friday of each month when I get to show off our NEW monthly Rose Card Patterns.

Unfortunately, I was so wrapped up in the Blog Hop that I didn’t get a new table runner turned in for February’s release. Guess you’ll have to wait until next month for a new table runner pattern. In the meantime, you can check out all of our VRD table runners HERE.

So, without further ado — here are February’s new Rose Card patterns:

Aren’t they AWESOME????

I am particularly intrigued by Helix and hope to have a new tutorial on the blog for Helix soon. And Neptune is certainly calling me, too.

Which one is your favorite?

Of course, you really don’t have to choose because you can get all 5 for the low low price of $8.95 HERE.

The Blog Hop WINNERS!

Bet you never thought I’d ever get around to announcing the winners of the Blog Hop. WOW! There really were A LOT of winners — each participating blogger chose 4 winners (1 to win a set of the Blog Hop patterns and 3 to win Sponsor Prizes) and 2 names to go into the Grand Prize drawing.

Well, after a couple weeks of getting things organized, winners contacted, and everything wrapped up, I am finally ready to reveal the winners. Almost ALL the prizes were claimed, but there were a few winners who never responded.

And guess what???? The winners came from all over the US, from Canada, and even from Australia!

I know a lot of you commented that you’d like to see another blog hop in the future. Maybe we’ll do this again, but for now we all need a little break. Whew! And the next thing I need to do is get all the prizes shipped out to all the lucky winners.

One last thank you to all of our participating bloggers and Blog Hop Sponsors! THANK YOU!!!

Villa Rosa Designs Blog Hop Update

Hello Quilty Friends!

Happy Thursday to you!

First, I have to wish you a Happy Groundhog Day! My fingers are crossed for an early spring this year.

WOW! What an AWESOME Blog Hop we just had, wasn’t it?

Right now I am in the midst of contacting all the winners, so please be patient as I work through each blogger’s list. There are a TON of prizes to award and this part is actually taking longer than I’d anticipated. Not a bad thing, really……..

What was your favorite part of the Hop? Mine was seeing all of the finished projects from each bloggers — each project just blew my mind! I was thrilled to see how the bloggers interpreted the patterns. Some even changed sizes or layouts to make the patterns their own. More than one blogger dove into their stash to create their quilts.

I am sew ready to start a new project, but I can’t seem to get away from the computer right now. Oh well…..I can dream.

I wanted to post the link to the Blog Hop Rose Card Collection one more time in case you wanted to get a set before they’re gone. You can get your set HERE.

ENTHUSIASTIC APPLAUSE goes out to all of our blogger participants. They are a very talented and creative group of folks. I hope you enjoyed getting to know them a little bit better.

I’m bummed that the Fast & Fun Blog Hop is wrapping up today. Sadly, all good things much come to an end sometime. And this Blog Hop really was a “good thing,” wasn’t it?

I really enjoyed reading each participating blogger’s post each day, didn’t you? I must confess that I read them over breakfast because I honestly couldn’t wait to see which quilt each blogger created! And I absolutely loved reading the comments on our VRD post as well as the comments on the other blogs. What fun!

THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to hop from blog to blog this past week. It really warms my heart that so many folks came along for our Fast & Fun Blog Hop ride!

If you haven’t finished reading all the posts for the Hop and leaving comments to register for prizes, you have through Sunday, January 29th to do so. Use the links above to visit each participating blogger to catch up on your reading and your prize entries.

I just have to do a quick shout out to my cousin, Robin, a fellow quilter. Robin had her knee replaced yesterday and after waking up from anesthesia and while she had a little lunch, she made sure to read Wednesday’s blog posts for the Hop. Now that’s real dedication! Heal fast, Cuz.

Winners will be drawn next week, notified, and prizes will be shipped in February. We will also be posting the winners in February, so stay tuned — it could even be you.
